The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. Every year, all students in these year levels are assessed on the same days using national tests in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) and Numeracy. The NAPLAN tests for 2012 will be held on Tuesday 15th, Wednesday 16th and Thursday 17th May. Individual student reports are provided to parents/carers later in the year.
NAPLAN tests are one aspect of the school’s assessment and reporting process, and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s progress in a wide range of learning areas. It is important to consider that individual student performance in a ‘one-off’ test can be affected by a variety of factors, including illness or the ability to maintain concentration for the duration of lengthy assessments. This is particularly the case for younger students.
Star of the Sea students participate in a NAPLAN preparation program involving class teachers and support staff. Teachers will ensure students are prepared for the tests and will provide appropriate support and guidance.
All students are encouraged to participate in NAPLAN tests. Students with special needs may qualify for special provisions which reflect the support normally provided in the classroom. Wherever possible, the school will organise for individual students who are absent at the time of testing to complete missed tests at another time during testing week. We encourage you to contact the school if you have any concerns.
Parents are welcome to support students at home.
There are three separate Literacy tests. The Reading test requires students to read 6-8 different text types and answer the related questions. The genre for the 2012 Writing test is Persuasive writing. The Language Conventions test includes aspects of spelling, punctuation and grammar.
The Numeracy test covers the content areas of Number, Measurement, Chance and Data, space, and Algebra, Function and Pattern.
